The Pet Poison helpline created this list of items, presented in the order of frequency, that caused the most emergency calls in 2013.
1. Chocolate: Dark equals dangerous! Bakers and dark chocolate are the most toxic, and mile chocolate if ingested in large amounts.
2. Xylitol: This sweetener found in sugarless chewing gum and candy, medications and nasal sprays causes a drop in blood sugar and liver failure only in dogs (not cats).
3. NSIDs; Ibuprofen, naproxen, etc. found in products like Advil, Motrin and Aleve. Dogs do not metabolize these drugs well; ingestion results in stomach ulcers and kidney failure.
Tune in tomorrow for Part 2 – the next 3 toxins on the list.
